Today was a blast… of Water.

The Jump For Joy Foundation had another camp today.  I love these camps.

Fighting the rising Childhood Obesity Epidemic by getting kids physically active is “Camp Jumps” primary mission.  Arming the parents with the knowledge they need to help their children eat healthier and stay active is another mission.

Bill gave another outstanding nutrition class to the parents.  Anthony and Branden worked tirelessly to keep the kids moving.  The many volunteers tried to keep up with the kids and always had a smile on their face.

Today’s theme: Firefighters Boot Camp.

Firefighters from The Clark County Fire Department came to the camp today in full gear.  They used fire hoses, relays, and fitness drills to get all the kids involved in fitness.   To have these Hero’s come and work with the kids was Amazing and Inspiring.

The firefighters explained the importance of staying fit and eating healthier foods to stay in shape with the kids.

The highlight came at the end of camp when everyone went outside and saw a Paramedic Ambulance, a Huge Fire Truck and an even Bigger Ladder Truck.
The firemen repositioned the Ladder truck, raised the ladder, had a very brave firefighter scale 6 stories in the air and turn on the fire hose cannon.  At 800 gallons per minute this site was awesome.

They also let the kids grab hold and discharge a fire hose and spray the parking lot.

All I could say was “WOW”.

The Jump For Joy Foundation is doing excellent work.

Have a Heart Healthy Day and Keep Moving America. – Keith

On Friday, April 1, I was invited to tour the Children’s Heart Center of Nevada.

This place was pretty incredible to say the least. The Children’s Heart Center is Nevada’s largest pediatric cardiology practice. The surgeons and cardiologists of this practice have outstanding reputations.

To say this was a compassionate and outstanding medical practice that gave back to the community far more than they received would be an understatement.

I knew this was a special place when I entered the waiting room where patients sign in to see the doctor. There were 3 cubicles with a receptionist behind each counter.  Every child patient and parent was greeted with a warm smile.  Each time the nurse came out to call on a patient, they smiled when calling the persons name. I’ve spoken and written a lot about customer service in a medical environment and ways medical staff can make a patient feel better.  This experience was at the top of my list for good examples.

Steve Eisen, the Chief Executive Officer showed me the practice with a personal tour and we focused on the work the Heart Center is doing for at-risk obese children.  They have a continuing 12-week program that children up to 18 can enroll in and learn and participate in healthy lifestyle choices and fitness programs.

When the children enter the program they meet with a Registered Dietician, an Exercise Physiologist, and a Clinical Psychologist. The center keeps the parents involved as well. This type of intervention cannot only save lives but help children live their lives.

In the Heart Disease and Cardiovascular area, children without the ability to pay are taken care of by the practice.  Their policy is to never turn away a child that needs cardiac care because of financial issues, thus A Childs Heart is Never Left Behind.

They work closely with the Children’s Heart Foundation  of Nevada as well.

I was able to spend time with their lead Exercise Physiologist, Lorie.  She’s an exercise program and cardiac rehabilitation specialist for children. The passion and enthusiasm for what she does was so evident.

What a great way to have spent an afternoon.  I learned so much.

My Heartfelt Thanks go out to the entire friendly staff of The Children’s Heart Center.

National Start Walking Day is Wednesday, April 6 and always the first Wednesday in April.

The time is now to get moving.  I couldn’t think of a better place to start than with a nice walk.

Will you walk?

Can you get your office motivated to take a walk during lunch?

What about a planned walk with your family or loved one after dinner?

Perhaps someone you know could use a nice walk.  Tell them about the day and walk with them.

The American Heart Association has all the tools on their site for someone to just start walking.

Make it a celebration of fitness.

Make it a day of Heart Health.

Have a Heart Healthy Day, Keith

In the past 1-½ years I’ve been able to volunteer a lot.  I’ve worked with several fantastic organizations and each and every project enriched my life.

Volunteering is not only a good thing to do for the people who benefit from your involvement but for you as well.

Volunteering has made me healthier and empowered me in so many ways. I relax when I give back.  Although some of the projects have been quite challenging and seemingly chaotic at times, I can’t relate any of the activities to a higher stress level but exactly the opposite.

I believe that a persons stress level goes way down when they volunteer.

The great thing about being a volunteer is that you get to pick your projects and causes. Lowering your stress level reduces your blood pressure and certainly helps the heart.

Pick a project, a group, a charity or something close to your heart and give back.  It will be the greatest gift you’ve ever given yourself. – Keith

It’s that time of year again.
The American Heart Association’s Las Vegas Heart Walk is October 15, 2011 at Mountains Edge Exploration Park.
This year I’m Co-Chair of all the Community Teams with Laurie Waldron and Co-Captain of Team “Outrunning My Shadow”.
Last year Team “Outrunning My Shadow” was the #1 Community Teams Fundraiser. There were 160 teams total.
This year we want to be #1 again. The money raised from the Heart Walk is spent on research for the American Heart Association. Every year, breakthroughs in the science of cardiovascular disease and stroke occur due to our diligent efforts.
I sincerely thank those of you who supported us last year financially and for those who supported us in spirit. Every gift counts, from $5 to $500 my gratitude and heart goes out to you. Please consider giving to the American Heart Association.
As they say at the AHA, “There is no Cure without U”
Thank You, Keith

SB230 is coming up for a vote in the Nevada Legislature tomorrow Friday, March 25.

The bill prohibits the sale or provision of foods containing Trans Fats at public schools within this State.

I’m hoping the advocacy work we’ve done and our testimony tomorrow pays off and the bill gets passed.

It will greatly improve the heart health of our children and reduce future medical expenditures for generations to come. – Keith

From the American Heart Association Below:

THE AHA ADVOCATES

The AHA will continue to monitor removal of trans fats from the food supply and assure that healthy replacement oils are used.

• The Association will advocate for legislation and regulation that removes industrially-produced trans fats from food preparation in restaurants and schools and requires that all foods brought in be zero grams of industrially-produced trans fat as labeled.

• The AHA will also address labeling issues to assure that there is accurate information provided to consumers about the actual amounts of trans fats in foods products.

• The AHA will support robust nutrition standards in schools and for foods marketed and advertised to children and strong procurement standards for foods purchased by employers and government feeding programs.

I just received my credential as a BLS Instructor from The American Heart Association.

BLS stands for Basic Life Support. Many know it as CPR, AED, Choking, & First Aid Training

As a BLS Instructor for the AHA, I can teach new and renewal classes for CPR/AED/Choking/First Aid to Medical Personnel and the General Public throughout the United States.

I’ve strongly advocated that more people need to be trained in proper CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) techniques and the use of an AED (Automated External Deliberator) and now I can help them accomplish this.

Knowing proper techniques and what to do in an emergency saves lives.  As frightening as an emergency situation would be – not knowing how to respond would be more frightening and significantly reduce victim’s chances of survival.

You, Yes You, Can Save a Life!

Are you CPR/AED trained? If not, call your local AHA office and find a training center near you. – Keith

March is National Nutrition Month.
This month we should raise our awareness and learn more about heart healthy nutrition.
The choices we make directly impact our health. Why not make healthier food choices?
Recently, I received my Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN) certificate. I learned so much about nutrition and not only how eating properly energizes the body but what happens when our bodies fall out of balance with poor nutrition.
National Nutrition Month is a nutrition campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association. The ADA website serves as an excellent resource for nutritional information.
The ADA and I agree that a variety of foods rich in color provide the greatest range of minerals and nutrients. This year they’ve launched an “Eat Right with Color.” Campaign.
The idea here is to have a variety of color on your plate.
I say, think Veggies and color!
The greater variety of colors the larger the variety of vitamins and minerals.
I know that each one of us and every child loves to see a rainbow. Isn’t it good luck? Have fun and create a rainbow on your plate. Tell your kids that they need to “Eat The Rainbow”.
Let them help you write a food list or shop for food that creates a rainbow on their plate. I guarantee they’ll have fun with it… and eat it. – Keith
